PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Graduate student Ricky Africo scored a pair of goals in Johnson & Wales (RI) University's 3-0 shutout of Dean College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
With the win, the Wildcats improved to 12-2-3 on the season (9-0-2 GNAC) and remained atop the conference standings with one match remaining in the regular season. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 4-7-4 (2-6-3 GNAC).
Africo scored the only goal of the first half at 17:19 when he scored an upper 90 goal off a pass from classmate Nick Gutekunst. JWU outshot the Bulldogs 12-2 through the first 45 minutes.
Sweeney doubled the JWU lead 2:10 into the second half when he took a drop pass from senior Garrett Groeling and powered a shot past the Dean keeper. Later, Africo made it 3-0 with a penalty kick goal into the lower left corner of the net.
Senior Jacob Friedman recorded one save to move to 11-1-3 on the season.
Prior to the match, the Wildcats honored seniors Friedman, Groeling, Jonathan Baker, Joseph Daleo, Quinton Kramarck, Kaseem Kureshi, Gianni Lisa, Esteban Osorio, Alexander Pane, Austin Sweeney, and Mikael Wallace-Boahin for their contributions to the program.
