The Johnson & Wales Men's Soccer team defeated the Dean Bulldogs in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match away from home on Wednesday afternoon, completing a two-goal comeback behind two goals from senior Nick Gutekunst (East Northport, N.Y.). The Wildcats improved to 12-3 (8-2 GNAC) while the Bulldogs fell to 3-11 (2-8 GNAC).
The Bulldogs opened up the scoring in the first half, with a goal from Christian Sayue in the 23rd minute that was assisted by Kazu Noguchi. Despite Johnson & Wales 12-2 advantage in shots in the first half, they went into the break trailing 1-0.
The Wildcats wasted no time in the second half, tying the game just four minutes into the second frame. Gutekunst found the back of the net on a pass from Ricky Africo (North Providence, R.I.), knotting the score a 1-1. The Wildcats had 13 shots in the half, but Gutekunst had the only goal, bringing the game to overtime.
In the second extra frame, Gutekunst was able to deliver the winning strike off of a pass from Austin Sweeney (Nutley, N.J.), marking the 2-1 victory for the Wildcats.
Johnson & Wales plays its penultimate game of the regular season on Saturday, when they travel to take on St. Joseph (Conn.) for a 3:00pm start.
