The Johnson & Wales Men's Soccer team defeated their cross-town rival Roger Williams on Monday afternoon . The Wildcats improved to 11-3 while the Hawks fell to 8-6-2.
Johnson & Wales opened the scoring with 15 seconds remaining in the first half, after a Nick Gutekunst (East Northport, N.Y.) cross was turned into the Roger Williams net by a Hawk defender, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Widlcats continued to pressure in the early stages of the first half as Ricky Africo's (North Providence, R.I.) shot from outside of the box connected with the crossbar in the 61st minute. Africo then contributed to a goal for the Wildcats, as he headed down a bouncing ball to Gutekunst, who fired home into an empty net for the Wildcats second goal.
Roger Williams pulled a goal back with under three minutes to play on a through ball by Andre Caceres that found Elias Choclin who passed into the bottom right corner to cut the Wildcat lead to one. Johnson & Wales defended the last two minutes and held the lead for a final score of 2-1.
The Wildcats get nack in action on Wednesday when they travel to Franklin, Mass. to take on the Dean Bulldogs in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup starting at 3:00pm.
