Wildcats Fall 3-0 to #5 Wentworth in GNAC Tournament

Box Score

BOSTON – One of the best seasons in school history came to a conclusion on Thursday for the Johnson & Wales University men's volleyball team. The Wildcats lost 3-0 (16-25, 19-25, 19-25) in the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament to fifth-ranked Wentworth.

Records:
Johnson & Wales: 20-15
Wentworth: 26-6

Statistical Leaders:
Kanila Chang (JWU): 6 kills
Kyle MacKnight (JWU): 8 kills, 8 digs

Of Note:
The Wildcats held their own with the Leopards in the early part of all three sets. A kill by rookie Zach Turner (Coventry, RI) pulled JWU within 20-18 in the second set, but Wentworth went on a 5-1 run to win the set. Donovan Kelley (Encinitas, Calif.) dialed up a kill to close the lead to 22-19 in the third set but the Leopards went on to win the deciding frame 25-19.

Playing in his final collegiate match, senior Kyle MacKnight (East Northport, NY) led the way with eight kills and eight digs. Kanila Chang (Orlando, Fla.) was next at six kills. Setter Jason Rhee (Aurora, Colo.) notched 22 assists.

Johnson & Wales had a 7-1 blocking advantage, but the Leopard outdug JWU, 43-23. That led to a .313-to-.148 Wentworth advantage in hitting percentage.

After just the second 20-win season in program history, head coach Scott Reslow should have another good team in 2018. He returns his top hitter in Chang as well as setter Cameron Ponce
