Men's Volleyball Splits with Nighthawks and Leopards

BOSTON – After dropping its opening match of the day, the Johnson & Wales University men's volleyball team forged a split by taking the second contest. The Wildcats notched a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-16, 25-19) over Newbury College. JWU started the day by dropping a 3-1 (22-25, 24-26, 25-23, 14-25) decision to fifth-ranked Wentworth.

Of Note:  
JWU used a 5-0 run in the middle of the first set against Newbury on their way to a first-set victory. The Wildcats put the second set out of reach quickly with a 10-1 run to start the frame.  JWU had a .313-.059 hitting advantage against the Nighthawks as well as 34-25 margin for digs and 5-0 for blocks.

Matt McCarthy (Millis, Mass) led all players with 10 kills while Michael Foglia (Wayne, NJ) was next with eight kills and a team-high six digs. Setter Jason Rhee (Aurora, Colo.) dished out 26 assists. Kyle MacKnight (East Northport, NY) had seven kills and a pair of blocks.

The Wildcat tied the second set at 24-24 but the Leopards got a kill then a JWU error to take the set 26-24. Freshman Zach Turner (Coventry, RI) got a kill to tie the third set at 20-20 then served four-straight points as the Wildcats went on to take the third stanza, 25-23.

Kanila Chang (Orlando, Fla.) posted double-digit kills for the second game in a row with 12 winners and seven digs. Turner tied his season-high with 10 kills. Setter Cameron Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) notched 37 assists as well as eight digs. Libero Alex Seda (San Juan, PR) led the team with 12 digs.

The Wildcats are back at home on Monday to take on Lesley at 7:30 p.m.
