Box Score 2 The men's volleyball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match against Emerson and #14 Wentworth on Saturday afternoon at Tansey Gymnasium. JWU topped Emerson in their first match of the day, 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-18) before suffering a 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 23-25) setback to host Wentworth in the final match of the afternoon.
Against Emerson, senior J.J. Bessette (Coventry, R.I.) grabbed a double-double with 49 set assists and 12 digs while sophomore Brendan Baker (Providence, R.I.) narrowly missed a double-double of his own with a game-high 22 kills and nine digs. Junior Kyle Eva (Charlestown, R.I.) and senior Chris Espinola (Derry, N.H.) each registered double digit kills while Eva accounted for two solo blocks and one block assist.
In the loss to Wentworth, senior Don Dias (Scituate, R.I.) paced JWU with 14 kills, three solo blocks and three block assists while Espinola again tallied ten kills. Emerson's Jackson Wiley led the way for the Lions with 18 kills and nine digs while Brendan McGonigle set 37 assists. The 14th ranked Leopards were led by Jake Reed's 14 kills and 11 digs. Colin Ritter collected a game-high 36 set assists in the victory.
With the split Johnson & Wales moves to 18-8 overall and 6-4 in the GNAC. JWU will return to action Tuesday, March 31st when they host Albertus Magnus in a GNAC match starting at 7:00 p.m.
