Johnson & Wales Men's Volleyball Falls To Wentworth & Lasell

The men's volleyball team was swept in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match at The Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday.

In the first match of the day for JWU, the two teams traded wins as Johnson & Wales took a 1-0 lead after a 25-22 win in the opener. Lasell evened the score at a game apiece after taking a 26-24 victory in the second game. Lasell hit .261 in the third game and prevailed by a 25-16 score before the Wildcats forced the deciding game with a 25-13 win in the fourth game. In game five, Lasell would take the match with a 15-10 victory.  For the Lasers, Alex Mill had 14 kills and seven digs, sophomore Dan Raffol had 11 kills, and freshman Drew Caruso had six kills and six blocks. Matt Dugan and Ryan Jackson had 23 and 20 assists, respectively, while senior Chris Burns had 13 digs in the victory.  The Wildcats were led by a 19-kill, three-block performance from junior Shawn Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) while sophomore Matt Jenkins (Damascus, Md.) had 10 kills and hit .533. Freshman Ryan Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) and sophomore Don Dias (Scituate, R.I.) each had seven kills, with Dias also recording six blocks. Sophomore J.J. Bessette (Coventry, R.I.) had 45 assists in the setback for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats then wrapped up the day with a 3-0 loss to host Wentworth.  After a close, 25-23 win in the first game, the Leopards used wins of 25-14 and 25-19 to close out the match.  Ross Burdett led the Leopards with nine kills to go along with five digs and three blocks. Rami Akouri, Sean Donahue, and Brian Mann each had eight kills and five blocks, while Zach Newhouse had 11 digs. Freshman Bill Shimkus had three aces. Tyler Moriarty had 30 assists in the victory for Wentworth.  Dias had eight kills for the Wildcats, while Shawn Kennedy added six kills and four blocks. Freshman Kyle Eva (Charlestown, R.I.) recorded five kills and four blocks while Bessette had 21 assists in the loss for the Wildcats.

With the two losses Johnson & Wales falls to 12-18 for the season and 7-7 in the GNAC while Wentworth improves to 19-9 overall and 10-4 in league play.  Lasell is now 13-144 overall and 6-8 in league play.  The Wildcats, the fourth seed for the 2013 GNAC Championship, will host fifth seed Lasell in the quarterfinals at the Wildcat Center on Tuesday, April 9th at 7:00 p.m.
