JAMES GILBERT

James Gilbert

The first NCAA All-American in the history of JWU (Providence) athletics in any sport now entering his 21st season on the Wildcats coaching staff, James Gilbert was the personification of student-athlete excellence.

Gilbert – who wrestled mostly at 157 lbs. or 165 lbs. – was regionally ranked throughout his entire four-year career. After winning the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) 165 lb. title as a senior, he took a 36-2 record into the 2002 NCAA National Championships, where he finished seventh to earn All-America accolades.

The first JWU wrestler to record over 100 wins, Gilbert won 123 matches from 1999-2002, including 37 by pin. A three-time Scholar All-American as recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), Gilbert earned a degree in entrepreneurship in 2002

He is currently employed by Citizens Bank and resides in Providence, Rhode Island with his wife Carla and daughter Millie.
