PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior
Bruno Teixeira scored a pair of goals – including the tying goal with 3:42 remaining in the match – to give the JWU (Providence) men's soccer team a 2-2 tie with in-state rival Rhode Island College Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Sophomores
Ryan Alves and
Carson Merluzzo were credited with assists on Teixeira's first tally, which came 11 minutes into the second half and tied the match at one. The draw moves the Wildcats to 2-0-3 on the season.
The visiting Anchormen (2-2-1) scored the lone goal of the opening half when Julian Orellana found the back of the net off an assist from Donovan Calle in the 23rd minute.
Early in the second half, Merluzzo sent a free kick towards the box that was redirected by Alves and onto the foot of Teixeira at 56:23. The Anchormen regained the lead at 77:39 before Teixeira's fifth marker of 2026 drew JWU even. Senior
Chad Parente played a free kick into the box that was – again – redirected by the head of Alves and over to Teixeira for a header.
RIC outshot the Wildcats 14-6 and received six corner kicks, compared to three for JWU. Junior goalkeeper
William Slayton stopped five shots for the home team.
JWU returns to the pitch on Saturday when the squad entertains Suffolk in Conference of New England (CNE) action. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
