BEVERLY, Mass. – The JWU (Providence) softball team suffered a pair of late-inning losses to Roger Williams University and the University of Hartford in the Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament Thursday afternoon at Endicott College.
With the losses, the Wildcats close their season with a 20-16 record.
Game One: Hawks 2, Wildcats 1
The Wildcats were held to five hits and scored their only run when senior
Jadyn Torres drew a leadoff walk to start the fifth and scampered around to score an unearned run following sac bunt from junior
Jessica Forneiro. RWU took the lead on a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. The Wildcats put the tying and go-ahead runs on in the seventh before first-year
Ashley Bergeron flew out to left to end the game. Senior
Jillian Reed was the hard-luck loser as she scattered four hits and allowed two runs with no walks and five strikeouts over six.
Game Two: Hawks 15, Wildcats 14
Bergeron went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI while junior
Chloe Brunelle and first-year
Hailey Cardiello each drove in two runs. The Wildcats led by as many as five (6-1) heading to the bottom of the third, only to see the Hawks strike for three in their half of the frame and six more in the fourth to grab a 10-8 lead.
Bergeron's grand slam in the fifth put JWU back in front (12-10), and a home run from senior
Mady Lyons and an RBI double off the bat of sophomore
Morgan Pelletier in the seventh made it a 14-11 advantage heading to the bottom of the seventh. Hartford then walked it off with a two-out, three run home run off Reed, who surrendered seven hits and six runs in 3.1 innings of relief.
Torres finished the contest with two RBI while classmate
Olivia Mason, along with Brunelle and Pelletier, each picked up two hits. Lyons, meanwhile, scored three runs and drew a pair of walks in her final collegiate outing.
