NEW LONDON, N.H. – Junior
Jack Richardson (165 lbs.) and freshman
Nico Rivera (125 lbs.) were each crowned regional champions for the JWU (Providence) wrestling team, which placed fifth at the 2026 NCAA Division III Northeast Regionals Sunday afternoon at Coast Guard Academy.
Brackets
Richardson – who placed second at last year's regional – defeated top-seeded Henry Forte (Williams) in the semis by a 16-0 tech fall (2:06). In the final, he hit a seven-point move in the final 38 seconds to down No. 3 seed Jashon Holmes (VTSU Castleton), 11-2. For his efforts, he was named co-Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Rivera, meanwhile, downed No. 3 seed Nick Beato (Coast Guard) 4-1 in the semis before taking down Andrew Marchese (VTSU Castleton) 3-2 in the finals. Rivera – who fell to Marchese in two previous meetings this season – gives the Wildcats nine first-place finishers in the last 10 years at regionals at 125 lbs.: Bobby Jordan (2016-17), Jay Albis (2018-19), Justin Lopez (2020),
Joziah Fry (2023-25), and now Rivera.
Graduate student
Thomas DiResta (157 lbs.) knocked off No. 2 seed Nate Camisciolo (VTSU Castleton) in his semifinal bout, 4-0, but forfeited the finals to No. 1 seed Peter Kane (Williams). In the process, DiResta became the third JWU student-athlete to qualify for the national championships.
Senior and reigning All-American
Adolfo Betancur (285 lbs.) dropped his semifinal match to Ben Katz (Springfield) but advanced to the finals of the blood round, where he fell to Rory Nolan (Norwich), 4-2. The Johnston, Rhode Island native caps his career with a fourth-place finish at regionals.
Sophomore
Jared Spahn (149 lbs.) was defeated by No. 1 seed Nathan Fitt (Coast Guard) in the semis and wrapped the tournament in fifth place. Graduate student
Patrick Wisniewski (174 lbs.) also finished fifth, falling to No. 5 Joseh Bolduc (NEC) in the semis, 4-1, before finishing his career with a 7-6 win over Aidan Faria (Rhode Island College).
Juniors
Zach Miller (184 lbs.) and
Anthony Fernandez (197 lbs.) both failed to advance past the quarterfinals on Saturday but wrestled back to place fifth in their respective weight class.
