University Statement on Lynch Arena Incident

2/16/2026 5:15:00 PM

We were devastated to learn of today's tragic shooting incident at the Dennis Lynch ice arena in Pawtucket, the official home of the JWU (Providence) men's and women's ice hockey teams. Johnson & Wales extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to those who were affected – the victims, their families, and the young athletes who were present.

We can confirm that a member of the JWU Athletics community was present at the time, a coach, who was in their office and is unharmed. No other students, staff or coaches were in the arena at the time, even though they had been there earlier in the day.

It is difficult to find the words to share, especially so soon after the Providence community was rocked by the violence on the Brown University Campus in December. I will reiterate the message shared by Chancellor Runey then: "There is no place for this kind of violence, anywhere or any time. At Johnson & Wales University, we remain resolute in our commitment to fostering a secure, safe and caring environment for every member of our community."

We recognize that incidents like this can cause distress, even for those not directly involved. I encourage anyone who feels impacted to lean on the support services available to our community.
Employees are encouraged to use the Employee Assistance Program via Coastline EAP 1-800-445-1195 for support.

In addition to the regular office hours at the Downcity Campus, Counseling Services will be available for student athletes in the Wildcat Center Lounge tomorrow from 9 am to 11 am and for all students in the HAC, within Health Services, from 11 am to 4:30 pm. Additionally, counseling staff can be reached after hours on-call via ProtoCall Services.

  • ProtoCall (after-hours): 1-888-222-4805
Thank you for continuing to care for one another. Together, we will move forward with resilience and compassion.
