Wildcats secure No. 5 seed in CNE Tournament with 2-1 win over Nichols

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Sofia Soares scored her fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick midway through the second half to send the JWU (Providence) women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Nichols College Tuesday night in Conference of New England (CNE) action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

First-year Anna Button also scored for the Wildcats, who closed the regular season with a 6-3-1 mark in conference play (8-9-1 overall) and secured the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament. They will head to Wenham, Massachusetts for a 3 p.m. match with No. 4 seed Gordon on Saturday, October 31.

JWU outshot the Bison 46-3 on the evening – including 18-1 in the first half – but found itself deadlocked at zero at halftime. After a turnover in their own end gave the Bison a 1-0 lead 2:41 into the second half, Button answered 63 seconds later to tie the match at one. Soares went on to pot the GWG at 68:22.
