Softball strengthens grip on first-place with DH sweep of Blue Jays

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The JWU (Providence) softball team inched closer to securing home field advantage in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoffs with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Saint Joseph (CT) Friday afternoon at the USJ Softball Field.

The Wildcats (23-13, 14-2 GNAC) need one win on Sunday against New England College to lock down hosting one of the conference's playoff pods next weekend at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Game One: Wildcats 9, Blue Jays 0 (5 inn.)
Senior Mackenzie Clee collected three hits and drove in a run with a single in the fourth, and freshman Morgan Pelletier plated two with a single in the first and a sac fly in the third. Sophomore Chloe Brunelle also picked up two hits and senior Katie Scheid scattered three hits and fanned two to improve to 13-5 on the season.

Game Two: Wildcats 4, Blue Jays 1
Junior Jillian Reed notched win No. 9 as she allowed three hits and one run with two strikeouts over seven innings of work. Sophomore Amanda Madigan's RBI double in the third tied the game at one before the Wildcats manufactured a pair of unearned runs in the third to grab a 3-1 lead. Senior Caroline Amorelli added an insurance run in the fifth.
