PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman
Isabella Suero poured in a career-high 39 points to help the JWU (Providence) women's basketball team secure the No. 1 seed in next week's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament with a 79-63 win over Regis (MA) College on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Wildcat Center.
The Newburgh, New York native went 8-of-17 from downtown and made all five attempts from the charity stripe as the Wildcats improved to 22-2 on the season (13-1 GNAC). The win sets the Wildcats up to host their first playoff game since the 2016-17 campaign on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
Freshman
Brianne Foley added 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go with 10 boards and four blocks in 32 minutes of action. Junior
Mikayla Caruso added seven points, nine boards, two dimes and two blocks while freshman
Mia Cruz snared 10 boards to go with five assists, three steals and three points.
JWU held a 25-12 lead after one and a 10-point lead at the break (39-29) as Suero banged in four from three-point land and led all scorers with 20 points. Foley, meanwhile, had 12 at the break while senior
Kyla Thompson tallied eight first-half rebounds.
The Pride (6-180, 5-9 GNAC) climbed to within three points (45-42) late in the third before a pair of free throws from Suero early in the fourth restored the lead to double-digits. JWU finished the contest shooting 38 percent (28-of-74) and held the Pride to 30 percent from the field – including 5-of-18 in the fourth quarter. The home team also held a 51-41 edge on the class.
