SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Sophomore
Brianne Foley scored a game-high 28 points for the JWU (Providence) women's basketball team in a 65-60 setback to Union College Wednesday morning in non-conference action at the Puerto Rico Tournament.
The New Rochelle, New York native went 10-of-21 from the field and sank seven-of-eight from the charity stripe to go with 15 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Classmate
Grace Jaffray was the only other JWU student-athletes to reach double-figures as she finished with 12 points. The reigning CNE Player of the Week struggled from the field as she made 5-of-26 shots (1-of-14 three-pointers) but managed to snare nine boards.
Freshman
Julia Blum registered six points, four boards and two steals in 19 minutes of play while senior
Mikayla Caruso racked up nine rebounds and four points for JWU, which moved to 8-3 on the season with the loss. The Wildcats were outrebounded 47-42 and shot 30 percent from the field (24-of-79) – including 4-of-34 from downtown (12 pct.).
JWU trailed by four at halftime (33-29) and by as many as 11 in the second half. A triple from Jaffray and a bucket from Caruso sparked a quick 6-0 run midway through the fourth to get the Wildcats to within three at 55-52. Union answered with a three with 4:12 on the block to push its lead back to six and hold on for its sixth win.
