Peña scores career-high 15 in win over Lyons

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Tahlia Peña scored a team-high 15 points for the JWU (Providence) women's basketball team in a 62-51 win over Wheaton (MA) College Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Wildcat Center.

The Nashua, New Hampshire native also pulled down seven boards and handed out three assists as the Wildcats improved to 4-2 on the season. Senior Mikayla Caruso snared a game-high 15 rebounds to go with five blocks and four points, and sophomore Grace Jaffray and Brianne Foley each dropped in 11 points.

JWU shot 32 percent from the field – including 7-of-30 from downtown (23 pct.) – and outrebounded the Lyons 54-43. Defensively, they forced 19 turnovers and held the visitors to just 29 percent shooting (18-of-62).

The Wildcats held a 34-24 halftime lead before the Lyons outscored them 21-10 in the third to cut their deficit to just three (44-41) after 30 minutes of action.

Sophomore Gabriela D'Ambrosio came off the bench in the fourth and provided a spark for head coach Dino Porcic's group with two points, one steal and one rebound in five minutes of action. Peña, meanwhile, knocked down 7-of-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.
