Golden Bears upend Wildcats in CNE Playoffs

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Emma Ferrara scored her sixth goal of the season for the JWU (Providence) field hockey team in a 5-1 at Western New England University Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament at Golden Bar Stadium.

Junior Ava Pontes was credited with an assist on the goal for the Wildcats, who closed the season with an 8-9 record. The fourth-seeded Golden Bears outshot the visitors 20-12 and held a 5-0 lead after three periods of action.

WNE scored twice in the first and again 3:07 into the second to build a 3-0 lead at the half. Two more Golden Bear 5:45 apart in the third pushed the JWU deficit to 5-0 before Ferrara found the back of the cage at 57:44.

Junior Sophia Brea made six saves while senior Zofia Bangs and sophomore Susannah Brown each took three shots to lead JWU.
