Saints upend Wildcats in GNAC Championship, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The JWU (Providence) women's soccer team came up one win shy of its bid for a fifth-straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship as No. 2 Emmanuel (MA) upended the top-seeded Wildcats 2-1 Saturday night at the Scotts Miracle-Go Athletic Complex.

The loss marked the first to a conference opponent since a 2-1 setback at St. Joseph's (ME) on October 26, 2019 – a span of 71 matches, during which time the Wildcats went 69-0-2 (regular season and playoffs). The Saints (18-2-1) entered the match amongst the highest scoring teams in the nation, averaging more than five goals a match, led by junior Sarah Dullaghan, who entered tonight's match with an NCAA single-season record 44 goals.

Hailey Goodman put the Saints ahead 1-0 just 33 seconds into the match with an upper 90 goal that beat senior goalkeeper Carly McCrumb. Dullaghan then deposited her 45th goal of the season inside the left post with 1:44 remaining in the first half to double the Emmanuel lead. The visitors held the Wildcats without a shot or a corner kick in the first half.

Senior Angelina Oliveira broke the scoring drought for the Wildcats and brought them to within one with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. JWU would not attempt another shot and must now wait and see if they receive an at-large selection into the NCAA Tournament on Monday.

The Wildcats outshot the Saints 7-3 over the final 45 minutes and were led by Oliveria and senior Skyla Landry with two each. McCrumb finished with one save and classmate Leah Bragaw – who came on to start the second half – tallied two saves.

Oliveria was named to the All-Tournament Team, along with graduate student Madison Sanborn and senior Emily DeRoehn.
