Grace Jaffray poured in a JWU (Providence) freshman-record 39 points as the women's basketball team outscored Salve Regina 68-36 in the second half and cruised to a 96-69 win in non-conference action Friday night at the Wildcat Center.
The Blue Hill, Maine native knocked down 14-of-27 from the field – including eight of her 13 three-point attempts (61.5 pct.) – to go along with six boards, two dimes and two steals in 35 minutes of action. Junior
Mikayla Caruso posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds while freshman
Isabella Suero netted 15 in her collegiate debut, rattling home four 3-pointers.
Trailing 33-26 at the half, the Wildcats shot a scorching 59 percent over the final 20 minutes of the contest – including 12-of-18 from behind the arc (66.7 pct.) – to turn a seven-point deficit into a 57-49 lead after three. Gaffray collected 28 of her points in the second half, going 5-of-6 from downtown while as the team, JWU clamped down defensively and forced eight second-half turnovers while committing just three of its own.
