PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior
Jonah Phang picked up a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in JWU-Providence's 72-67 loss to Saint Joseph's College of Maine Wednesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball action at the Wildcat Center.
Phang was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field for the Wildcats, who also received 18 points, five boards, four dimes, and two steals from graduate student
Aireus Raspberry and 15 points from junior
Josh Zangerle. JWU held a 35-31 edge on the glass and forced 13 second-half turnovers, but were unable to overcome 21 of its own over the course of the contest.
The Monks led by six at the break (44-38) behind 11 points from Wani Donato and 10 from John Paul Frazier. Zangerle led all student-athletes with 13 points (5-of-10 FG) while Raspberry dropped in 11. JWU knocked down 52 percent of its shots (15-of-29) – including 5-of-10 from downtown – while Saint Joseph's (ME) was nearly as deadly from the field as it shot 50 percent (16-of-32).
In the second half, the Wildcats jumped in front 58-57 on a basket from freshman
Jaylen King with 6:55 on the clock before a basket from Julian Llopiz at the other end put the Monks ahead for good. JWU cut its deficit to one on several occasions – including on a dunk from Phang with 1:54 remaining and later on a triple from King with 68 seconds left – but were never able to pull even.
The Wildcats finished the night shooting 45 percent from the field but sank just 6-of-11 from the charity stripe (55 percent). The Monks drained 47 percent of their field goal attempts and saw five student-athletes hit double-figures in scoring, led by Frazier with 18, and Donato and Llopiz with 15 apiece.
