Wildcats season ends with NCAA Tournament loss to Capitals

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Johnson & Wales (RI) University women's lacrosse team saw its 2023 campaign come to a close with a 17-7 loss to No. 24 Christopher Newport in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon at Clark Field on the campus of Gettysburg University.

Senior Taina Gamory and junior Maris DiBeneditto each scored three times for the Wildcats (16-3), who also received three ground balls, three draw controls, two caused turnovers, and an up-goal from senior Margaret Johnson. JWU – which scored six of its seven goals on free position attempts – finished the season tied for the second-highest win total in program history (16).

The Wildcats trailed 5-0 in the second before consecutive goals from DiBeneditto 33 seconds apart brought them to within three. The Captains (12-8) responded with six of the next seven goals to build an 11-3 halftime lead.

Gamory's 58th tally of the season midway through the third helped the Wildcats close their deficit to 13-4. Christopher Newport answered with a pair to move in front 15-4 heading to the fourth, where Gamory, DiBeneditto, and Johnson all scored for JWU.

Sophomore Emma Glyman recorded 10 saves for the Wildcats, who were outshot 34-19. Gamory won six draw controls and caused a pair of turnovers while both Gamory and senior Ally Wilson collected two ground balls.
