PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seniors Mike Catuosco and Andrew Vasile scored fourth-quarter goals to propel the Johnson & Wales (RI) University men's lacrosse team to an 11-9 win over Norwich University Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Scotts Miracle Gro Athletic Conference.
Graduate student Alex Padula added five points (3-2-5) for the Wildcats, who improved to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Sophomore goalkeeper Trent Madigan recorded nine saves between the pipes for head coach Tim Murphy while Vasile and junior Hayden Haldane each finished with two goals.
The Cadets (1-7, 0-2 GNAC) scored the final three goals of the first half to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 halftime lead. After trading goals to open the third quarter, JWU struck for three goals in a span of 39 seconds as Padula, Haldane, and sophomore Donny McInnis each tickled the twine to give the Wildcats a 9-7 lead.
Norwich struck for a pair of goals 28 seconds apart early in the fourth to tie the game at nine before Catuosco potted the GWG six seconds after the Cadets tied the game. Vasile added an insurance marker with 4:30 remaining. JWU owned the fourth quarter, outshooting the Cadets 16-6 while forcing seven turnovers.
Catuosco continued to dominate the X, winning 21-of-23 draws. Senior Louis Quinones was a force on defense for the Wildcats, causing four turnovers.
