PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Noah Fye scored three goals – including the game-winner early in the fourth quarter – to propel the Johnson & Wales (RI) University men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 win in head coach Tim Murphy's debut Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Senior Mike Catuosco won 15-of-19 at the X and finished with 19 ground balls and three assists for the Wildcats (1-0), who won their second-consecutive season-opener. Graduate student Joe McIntyre and sophomore Jackson Vecchio each scored twice, senior Andrew Vasile collected a pair of apples, and senior Alex Padula picked up a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Trent Madigan recorded 11 saves to record his seventh collegiate win for JWU, which outshot the Huskies (0-2) by a 43-33 margin. USM went 2-for-5 in man-up situations and forced 24 turnovers while committing 22 of its own.
The Wildcats led by one at the half (4-3) behind a pair of goals from Fye and two assists by Catusco. Each school found the back of the net three times in the third before the Huskies knotted the game at seven3 3:35 into the fourth. Catusco won the ensuing face-off and fed Fye for the GWG just 10 seconds later.
