Field Hockey wins third-straight GNAC title with 4-1 win over Colby-Sawyer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Graduate student Margaret Johnson collected a goal and an assist to propel the JWU-Providence field hockey team to a 4-1 win over No. 3 Colby-Sawyer College Saturday afternoon in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship contest at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Freshmen Rayne Millett and Ava Pontes, along with sophomore Kameron Marando, also scored goals for the Wildcats (17-2), who became the first school since St. Josephs' (ME) to win three-straight GNAC titles (2016-19). The Wildcats controlled the contest from start to finish, outshooting the Chargers 18-4. Johnson was named Tournament MVP and joined juniors Haley Budenas and Madison Young on the All-Tournament Team.

Johnson scored the only goal the Wildcats would need 2:18 into the second quarter, depositing a rebound into the back of the cage. Less than four minutes later, Millett doubled the lead off a feed from senior Katie Sloan.

In the second half, goals from Marando at 38:36 and Pontes at 40:20 closed the JWU scoring. Colby-Sawyer (14-5) got on the board with seven minutes remaining in the fourth.

Freshman Sophia Brea recorded two saves in goal for JWU, who will find out where they will head for the NCAA Tournament Sunday night at 10:30 p.m.
