Field Hockey closes regular season with shutout of Blue Jays

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Ava Pontes scored twice in JWU-Providence's 4-0 win over the University of Saint Joseph Wednesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey action at the Scott Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Graduate student Margaret Johnson and freshman Rayne Millett also found the back of the net for the Wildcats (14-2, 9-1 GNAC), who have secured the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and will host a quarterfinal contest Saturday at noon. Graduate student Mackenzie Wolf, senior Kaitlyn Freeman, junior Darian Shepherd, and sophomore Zofia Bangs were all credited with assists as JWU outshot the Blue Jays 21-1.

Pontes scored the only goal JWU would need at 18:37 with a turnaround shot. Johnson and Millett scored 1:08 apart in the third quarter to make it 3-0 before Pontes capped the scoring with her 11th of the season in the fourth.

Freshman Sophia Brea improved to 14-2 in goal for the Wildcats.
