WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Graduate student and reigning All-America selection Jillian Miele scored the game-winning goal early in the second quarter to propel the Johnson & Wales (RI) University field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Eastern Connecticut State University Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Rock McCarthy Field.
Miele also assisted on sophomore Darian Shepherd's tally as the Wildcats (1-0) won their opener for the second-straight season. Senior Margaret Johnson set up Miele's game-winner, which came at 21:48 of the second quarter when she spun and tucked a shot inside the left post.
Senior Madison Flaxington turned aside eight shots to collect her 20th career win for JWU, which was outshot 12-11 on the afternoon. The Warriors (0-1) held an 11-6 edge in penalty corners.
