BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Freshman Carlos Andrade scored his first collegiate goal in the 71st minute to break a one-all tie and lift the Johnson & Wales (RI) University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Bridgewater State University Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Swenson Field.
Sophomore Connor Elliott also found the back of the net as the Wildcats (1-0-0) won their fifth-straight season-opener, including a win at BSU to open the 2019 campaign. Overall, JWU is 9-0-1 in its last 10 openers, dating back to 2012.
Elliott staked the Wildcats to a 1-0 lead when he tucked a shot from 20 yards out inside the left post. Less than 10 minutes later, the Bears converted a penalty kick to even the score at one. In the second half, senior Alexander Pane played a ball towards the box that deflected off a BSU defender and right to Andrade, who headed the ball into the left side of the net at 70:45 for the GWG.
JWU – which outshot the home team 20-9 – received five saves from senior netminder Jacob Friedman.
