The No. 8 regionally ranked Johnson & Wales Men's Soccer team defeated the Rivier Raiders on Wednesday night in their final regular season match, bringing their season record to 14-3 (10-2 GNAC). The Raiders fell to 3-13-1 (1-10-1 GNAC). The victory is the Wildcats eighth in a row, and they extended their home unbeaten streak to 25 games (23-0-2) dating back to September 26th, 2018.
The lone goal of the match came from a combination of two seniors, Nick Gutekunst (East Northport, N.Y.) and JP Rioux (Stony Point, N.Y.). After a free kick by Rioux forced the Raider goalkeeper into a diving save, the Wildcats earned a corner kick. Rioux took the kick for JWU, and found a darting Gutekunst at the back post, who headed into the bottom corner to secure the lead. JWU was able to hold off any pressure from the Raiders, taking the match 1-0. Closing out the regular season, the Wildcats are one of two schools in the New England region who reached the 14 victory mark this year.
The Wildcats have locked in the No. 3 seed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference playoffs, and will host the No. 6 seed Regis (Mass.) Saints on Saturday, October 30th at 5:00pm
