PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior
Christopher Vargas scored the tying goal with 53 seconds remaining in the match to give the JWU (Providence) men's soccer team to a 2-2 tie with Suffolk University Saturday afternoon in Conference of New England (CNE) action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Freshman
Nate Zeliger added his first collegiate goal in the second half as the Wildcats (2-0-4, 1-0-1 CNE) rallied to earn a tie for the second-straight match. Senior
Bruno Teixeira and sophomore
Ryan Alves each recorded an assist and junior goalkeeper
William Slayton stopped three shots to remain unbeaten in his JWU career (2-0-4).
Following a scoreless first half which saw the Wildcats outshoot the Rams 6-1, the visitors grabbed a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick goal at 55:17. Zeliger evened the match at one when he collected a deflected ball and scored at 67:08.
The Rams then scored what appeared to be the game-winner on a breakaway with 5:36 remaining. With less than 60 seconds remaining in the match, Teixeira attempted a bicycle kick in the box that hit a Suffolk defender and found Vargas, who tucked the ball into inside the left post. The goal was his second of the season.
JWU wrapped the match with a 13-5 edge in shots and a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Vargas led all student-athletes with four shots.
