NEW LONDON, Conn. – The No. 6 Johnson & Wales women's volleyball team (4-1) only needed three sets (25-11,25-20,25-18) to down Coast Guard (3-2) on the first night Connecticut College/Coast Guard Tournament, Friday night.
Kate Walker (JWU) – 9 kills, .389 attack percentage, 7 total blocks (7BA)
Maria Coniglio (JWU) – 8 kills, 389 attack percentage, 3 total blocks (3BA)
Hannah Dolan (JWU) – 6 kills, .455 attack percentage, 3 total blocks (3 BA)
Brylee Frank (JWU) – 3 kills, 25 assists, 5 total blocks (5 BA)
Senior middle blocker Kate Walker (Oakland, Calif.) dominated a convincing first set win, 25-11, to set the tone of the match. The northern California native was a perfect five-for-five at the net, while tallying four block assists.
Coast Guard made the second set close, tying the match at 11-11, but the Bears were unable to keep up the momentum. The Wildcats took advantage of three straight Bear miscues, sparking a 5-0 run to take a 16-11 lead and never looked back. Senior outside hitter Maria Coniglio (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) was four of 10 from the floor with one error in a 25-20 lead.
The Wildcat offense was a balanced attack in the third and final set. Junior middle blocker Hannah Dolan (San Clemente, Calif.) led the way with three kills on six attempts, while senior setter Brylee Frank (Palm City, Fla.) paced the offense with 10 assists and three block assists.
Johnson & Wales (R.I.) returns to the court tomorrow at the Coast Guard/Connecticut College tournament playing Brandeis University at 11 a.m.
