PROVIDENCE, RI – Fresh off a top-five ranking, the Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team opened its home schedule on Wednesday against Endicott. The No. 5 Wildcats were tested by the Gulls, but came out with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22) victory.
Johnson & Wales: 6-1
The top-five ranking is the highest in school history. JWU debuted this year at number six.
Johnson & Wales had early leads in each set, only to let the Gulls back in the match. Katie Leidhold had three of her 10 kills in the final seven points to finish off the second set after EC got within 18-16.
JWU had a 21-16 lead in the third set, but committed three errors that allowed Endicott back in the game at 23-22. The Gulls returned the favor with a service error then the last of Kate Walker's match-high 13 kills ended the match
Johnson & Wales hit .270, compared to .229 by the visitors with a 58-45 dig advantage. Endicott did have a 4-2 blocking margin.
Topped by Walker's baker's dozen, the Wildcats had three players with double-digit kills. Maria Coniglio just missed a double-double with 11 kills and eight digs. Middle blocker Hannah Dolan added nine kills. Setter Brylee Frank handed out 39 assists and Elyssa Nicolas produced a match-high 20 digs.
Emma Mancini led the Gulls with 10 kills and Emily Diezeman followed with eight. Mackenzie Kennedy notched 13 digs and setter Zoey Gifford amassed 37 assists.
The Wildcats are back on the road Friday to take on Norwich at 5 p.m.
