BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team stayed undefeated with a pair of victories on Saturday. The Wildcats posted a 3-0 triumph against Bates then took down host Bowdoin 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-22).
Johnson & Wales: 10-0
With the pair of victories, Johnson & Wales ran its regular season winning streak to 43 matches. JWU stayed undefeated against Bowdoin, but hadn't played the Polar Bears since 2005. The win over the Bobcats was the first since 2008.
After cruising through the first two sets, the Wildcats were tested by the Polar Bears in set three. Bowdoin pulled within 22-21 but Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.) and Brylee Frank (Palm City, Fla.) produced kills to finish the match.
Johnson & Wales had a trio of players record a triple-double. Frank had 29 assists and 12 digs. Maria Coniglio (Old Bethpage, NY) and Leidhold each had a match-high 11 kills while Coniglio added 15 digs and Liedhold produced 11.
Led by libero Elyssa Nicolas' (Brisbane, Calif.) team-high 19 digs, JWU had an 81-73 advantage in that category. The Wildcats outhit the Polar Bears, .285-to-.076, and had a 7-1 advantage in blocks.
JWU's defense got the day started on the right note. The Wildcats recorded 10 blocks and had 49 digs. Kate Walker (Oakland, Calif.) produced six blocks and Leidhold added four. Nicolas had nearly half of JWU's digs, producing 21.
Rookie Hannah Dolan (San Clemente, Calif.) led the team with nine kills and was one of four players with five or more winners. Walker was next with eight kills and Coniglio added seven.
Johnson & Wales opens conference play on Wednesday when it travels to Anna Maria for a 7 p.m. contest.
