Wildcats Roll to Weekend Sweep of JWU Invitational

PROVIDENCE, RI – It was business as usual for the Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team on Saturday. The hosts of the JWU Invitational opened the day with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 25-9) triumph against Bridgewater State. The Wildcats wrapped up the tournament with a decisive 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-14) win over Wheaton.

Of Note:
For the second match in a row, the Wildcats hit over .500 as a team with a .546 rate against Bridgewater State. Leading the way was middle blocker Kate Walker (Oakland, Calif.) as she hit .769 with a match-high 10 kills. Rookies Bella Oldham (Irvine, Calif.) and Hannah Dolan (San Clemente, Calif.) were next with nine and seven kills, respectively.

Setter Brylee Frank (Palm City, Fla.) dished out 34 assists and was one of five players with five or more digs. BSU was limited to a .028 hitting percentage thanks to 46 JWU digs. Johnson & Wales was dominant at the service line, recording 10 aces. Freshman Mikayla Arimura (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) topped all players with four while junior Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.) chipped in three.  

Down 13-12 in the first set to Wheaton, the Wildcats pulled ahead, 16-14, on a Leidhold kill. Monica Cordova (Jersey City, N.J.) served five-straight points to put the set out of reach. Leidhold got a kill to put JWU up 15-12 in the second set, then served three aces and kept the Lyons out of system as part of an 11-1 run to finish the set.

Leidhold produced her second double-double of the year with a season-high 15 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Maria Coniglio (Old Bethpage, NY) just missed out on a double-double with eight kills and 10 digs. Libero Elyssa Nicolas (Brisbane, Calif.) had match-high 12 digs as JWU out-dug the Lyons, 56-34. The Wildcats also had a .307-.040 advantage in hitting percentage.

Next Game:
The Wildcats are on the road next Saturday for a pair of matches against Bates & Bowdoin.
