PROVIDENCE, RI -- The Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team looked like it was in midseason form during day one of the JWU Invitational. The Wildcats ran their home-court winning streak to 25 matches by beating Gordon 3-0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-13) and Maine Maritime 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-16) on Friday.
Johnson & Wales: 6-0
Johnson & Wales jumped on the Scots right from the start of the match. JWU established an 11-5 lead in the first set then rookie Elyssa Nicolas (Brisbane, Calif.) served eight-straight points, including a pair of aces. The Wildcats hit .316 for the match while limiting Gordon to -.047 thanks to 50 digs and eight blocks.
Five different players had five or more kills, led by freshman Gabbie Scudder (Ashburn, Va.). Fellow rookie Kelly Delaney (Calais, Maine) produced four blocks while setter Brylee Frank (Palm City, Fla.) handed out 29 assists.
Frank added 31 more assists in the victory over Maine Maritime. She continued to spread the wealth on offense, getting four Wildcats to at least four kills. Freshman Hannah Dolan (San Clemente, Calif.) led the way with a match-high 11 kills. Johnson & Wales hit .526 as a team while limiting the Mariners to just .082.
Day two of the Johnson & Wales Invitational kicks off Saturday with the Wildcats taking on Bridgewater State at 10 a.m.
