BRISTOL, RI – The song remains the same for the Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team. The Wildcats won twice on Saturday at the Roger Williams Invitational to improve their perfect record to 17-0. JWU topped Worcester State 3-0 (25-6, 27-25, 25-12) then took down the hosts 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-15).
Johnson & Wales: 17-0
In its 17 victories this year, Johnson & Wales has only dropped one set. Since Rivier took the third set on September 21, the Wildcats have won 16-straight sets. That streak was almost broken against WSU as the Lancers had a 15-3 lead in set two before the Wildcats rallied for victory.
Roger Williams almost took the opening set as it claimed a 24-21 lead. Two aces from Gianna Esposito (Larkspur, Calif.) as well as kills by Brylee Frank (Palm City, Fla.) and Maria Coniglio (Old Bethpage, NY) were part of a 5-0 run to give JWU the opening set.
Frank had a match-high 31 assists in both matches. She added a season-high 17 digs against the Eagles for her sixth double-double of the season. Esposito led all players with 18 digs in the Roger Williams match.
Rookies Kate Walker (Oakland, Calif.) and Coniglio led the offensive attack on Saturday. Walker had a team-high 11 kills against Worcester State while Coniglio topped everyone with 13 kills versus the Eagles. Coniglio also had four blocks against Roger Williams, as did Emily Kalmink (Byron City, Mich.). Kalmink added eight kills and hit .381 in the final match of the day.
Johnson & Wales gets back into conference action on Tuesday when it travels to Anna Maria for a 7 p.m. match.
