Women’s Tennis Ends Regular Season With Shutout of Seahawks

NEWPORT, RI – With the GNAC Championships starting next week, the Johnson & Wales University women's tennis team tuned up with their eighth shutout of the season. The Wildcats traveled across the state to Salve Regina and blanked the Seahawks, 9-0, on Sunday.

The Wildcats improve to 11-2 overall while SRU fell to 2-9. It's the fifth season in a row that JWU has won 11 or more matches.

JWU set the tone for the afternoon by taking all three doubles matches with ease. Luiza Silva Simoes (Cuiaba, Brazil) and her partner Samantha Gambino (Middletown, Conn.) were the first off the court with an 8-2 win at number three. Nina Cohen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Delaney Macchirole (Greenport, NY) finished the regular season with an 11-1 record as they won 8-4 at number one. Wrapping up the doubles sweep was the number two team of Holly Olson (Mukwonago, Wisc.) and Madison Hernandez (Phoenix, Ariz.) and their 8-6 win.

Silva Simoes made quick work of Priscilla Gaspar at number two singles, winning 6-0, 6-3. Cohen wrapped up the fall season with only one singles loss as she won 6-2, 6-4 at number one against Emma Gruber and secured the team victory.

Johnson & Wales now waits to see who it will face in the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament. The Wildcats won the tiebreaker between Suffolk and Simmons for the top seed. JWU faces the winner of #4 St. Joseph (CT) and #5 Albertus Magnus on October 22 at 2 p.m. at the Winchester Tennis Center. The Wildcats beat the Falcons 9-0 and posted an 8-1 over USJ.
