Women’s Tennis Narrowly Loses 5-4 at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Tough out of conference matches will help the Johnson & Wales University women's tennis team later this month when it vies for the GNAC Championship. The Wildcats almost pulled off a good win on Wednesday, but came up just short in a 5-4 loss at Springfield.

The Wildcats dropped to 10-2 overall. The Pride improved to 7-5.

Springfield took number one and three doubles, but Johnson & Wales got a key break at number two as Nina Cohen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Delaney Macchirole (Greenport, NY) won 8-6. Cohen tied the match at 2-2 when she won 6-1, 6-2 over Melissa Parrish at number two singles.

The Pride won at number five and six singles to recapture the lead, 4-2. The Wildcats got within a point when Morgan Thompson (Fargo, ND) beat Rachel London 6-3, 6-4 at number one. Unfortunately, Springfield captured the deciding point with a victory at number four. Freshman Luiza Silva Simoes (Cuiaba, Brazil) rounded out the match with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win at number three over Rebecca Link.

JWU plays its final regular season home match on Saturday when it hosts Anna Mara at 6 p.m. The match will be played at Centre Court in Riverside.
