PROVIDENCE, RI – Two of the best offenses in the GNAC met on Saturday, but it was the defenses that took center stage. The Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team scored late in the first half and the defense kept Emmanuel at bay for the 1-0 victory.
Emmanuel: 8-3, 4-1 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 8-5, 5-1 GNAC
EC: Lexi Gawron (L, 8-3) 1 save
JWU: Colleen Lynch: (W, 8-5) 2 saves
Deja Hursey (JWU): 1 Goal
Neither team could find the back of the net for most the first half. Deja Hursey's first shot attempted was blocked, but she collected the rebound and put it home for the only score of the game.
Johnson & Wales' defense was tough on Emmanuel in the first half as none of the Saints' six shots made it on frame. JWU outshot the Saints, 19-13, overall.
JWU goalkeeper Colleen Lynch stopped all three shots she faced in the second half for her third shutout in four games. The New Milford, Conn. native has only allowed one goal in her last 352 minutes in between the pipes.
The Wildcats continue GNAC action Wednesday when they host Colby-Sawyer at 7 p.m.
