PROVIDENCE, RI – Visiting Lasell College got a first-half penalty kick and a late insurance goal to defeat the Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team. The Lasers beat the Wildcats, 2-0, on Saturday.
Lasell: 10-5, 10-1
Johnson & Wales: 14-3, 9-1
Erika Badger (LC): 1 Goal (GW)
The loss snapped the Wildcats' 10-game winning streak. It's also JWU's first regular-season loss to a GNAC team in its last 30 matches. The Wildcats' last loss was a 2-1 decision to Emmanuel on September 10, 2015. During that time, JWU was 27-0-3 versus the league.
A JWU foul in the 33rd minute set up a Lasell penalty kick. Erika Badger drilled the free kick to put the Lasers on the board. At the 76:00 mark, Melissa Vasquez put back a rebound to stake Lasell to a 2-0 lead.
Johnson & Wales had its opportunities, holding an 11-6 advantage in shots. Sara LaClair made three saves to improve to 10-5 while Wildcat goalkeeper Colleen Lynch (New Milford, Mass.) fell to 14-2.
The Wildcats wrap up the regular season on Wednesday at Emmanuel. The winner will be the number two seed in the upcoming GNAC Tournament.
