PROVIDENCE, RI – The Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team got a late insurance goal to stay undefeated in the GNAC. The Wildcats defeated Simmons, 3-1, on Saturday.
Simmons: 7-5-2, 5-4-1 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 13-2, 9-0 GNAC
It was fitting that the first two goals were scored by JWU senior Kyra Selner (Sterling, Va.) on Senior Day. Jaclyn Larsen (Florham Park, N.J.) fed Selner a sweet pass into the box and she drilled it home in the 16th minute.
Seven minutes later, Selner dribbled past a Simmons defender and snuck the ball in the lower right-hand corner. The two goals moved her career total to 103 points, making her just the third player in school history to eclipse the 100-point barrier.
The Sharks made it a close contest in the second half. Gabrielle Klane got past a JWU defender and scored from eight yards out.
Johnson & Wales got some breathing room when Natalie Gallucci (Coventry, RI) put back the rebound of her own shot with 15 minutes remaining in the game.
Both defenses limited the scoring opportunities as they combined for only 11 shots on goal. JWU goalkeeper Colleen Lynch (New Milford, Conn.) made four saves for her 13th win of the season. Simmons' Casey Halle stopped three shots.
The Wildcats go across town on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for their final non-conference game of the regular season at Rhode Island College.
