PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was only a matter of time before the top offense in the GNAC got going on Wednesday. The Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team scored all of its goals in the second half as the Wildcats defeated Rivier, 7-0.
Rivier: 1-5-1, 0-4-1, GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 8-2, 5-0 GNAC
After none of its 21 shots in the first 45 minutes found the net, Johnson & Wales got on the board with its first shot of the second half. Deja Hursey (Columbia, Md.) dribbled around the keeper and scored from five yards out for her 11th goal of the season.
Two minutes after that it was Selner's turn to score. Olivia Cairrao (Bristol, R.I.) played a through ball to the senior who hammered it home from 12 yards out on the right side. Cairrao scored in the 66th minute then added her league-leading 12th goal four minutes later.
JWU controlled the game with its attacking offense, taking 40 shots while the Raiders only got off three and none on goal. It's the most shots for the Wildcats since firing 41 at Norwich on September 18, 2016. Rivier goalkeeper Lauren Goodspeed made a season-high 14 saves.
Johnson & Wales is on the road Saturday when it travels to Mount Ida for a 5 p.m. contest.
