NEW LONDON, Conn. – Three different players scored goals as the Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team won its third game in a row. The Wildcats went on the road to defeat the Coast Guard Academy, 3-0, on Monday.
Coast Guard: 4-4
Johnson & Wales: 7-2
Johnson & Wales scored its first goal before most fans could get in their seats. With only 30 seconds off the clock, Cat Nolan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) dribbled down the right side then ripped a shot from just inside the box for the score.
The Wildcats got a pair of insurance goals in the second half. Freshman Brianna DeLuna (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored on a header in the 54th minute. It was the first goal of her collegiate career.
With 12 minutes left in the game, junior Deja Hursey (Columbia, Md.) found the back of the net for the 10th time this season. Hursey is tied with teammate Olivia Cairrao as the top goal scorer in the conference.
Both teams took 15 shots, but the difference was JWU goalkeeper Colleen Lynch (New Fairfield, Conn.). She stopped all five shots she faced to record her second shutout in a row.
The Wildcats are back in conference action on Wednesday when they play host to Rivier at 7 p.m.
