PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team got all the offense it would need in the first half to carry the Wildcats to victory. Deja Hursey recorded a hat trick and JWU stayed undefeated in GNAC action with their 5-0 victory over Norwich.
Norwich: 1-3, 1-3 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 4-1, 2-0 GNAC
Johnson & Wales got on the board less than 10 minutes into the game when Natalie Gallucci's (Coventry, R.I.) crossing pass was headed into the goal by Hursey (Columbia, Md.). A miscue by the Norwich keeper 15 minutes later allowed Hursey to score her second goal of the game and put JWU up, 3-0.
Hursey notched the second hat trick of her collegiate career when she slid a shot past the Norwich keeper at the 32:13 mark. Her first hat trick came on October 1, 2016 against Saint Joseph's.
In between Hursey's first two goals, Olivia Cairrao (Bristol, R.I.) scored for the third time in five games. Cat Nolan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) served up a pass that the rookie headed in for her sixth goal of the season.
Johnson & Wales had a decisive advantage in shots, 29-4, while also attempting eight corner kicks to none for the Cadets. Leandra Flores-Nieves, who came in for the injured, Katie Bishop-Manning, made 10 saves. JWU goalkeeper Colleen Lynch (New Milford, Conn.) only had to make three saves to record her third shutout of the year.
The Wildcats are back at home on Saturday to face Brandeis for a 1 p.m. contest.
