NEWTON, Mass. – Twelve minutes into the GNAC opener between the Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team and Lasell it appeared the match was going to be a shootout. Between the rain and good goalkeeping neither squad would score the rest of the way as the teams played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday.
Johnson & Wales: 3-0-1
Coming into the game, JWU freshman goalie Colleen Lynch (New Milford, Conn.) had not given up a goal in the first 300 minutes of her career. The Lasers ended that streak four minutes into the contest as they took a 1-0 lead. The rookie would settle down and turn away the remaining 12 shots she faced, including a pair in overtime.
Junior Kyra Selner (Sterling, Va.) continues to be one of the top goal scorers in the conference. She answered Lasell's goal with one of her own eight minutes later when she beat a LC defender and buried the ball in the back of the net for her third goal in four games.
Neither team would score the rest of the way as the top two teams in the GNAC preseason poll played to a 1-1 tie for the second year in a row. Lasell had a decided 23-5 advantage in shots, including 13-4 on goal, but Lynch keep the Lasers at bay through regulation and two overtimes.
The Wildcats are back at home on Monday when they play Connecticut College at 7 p.m.
