Wildcats Win Three Titles at Futures Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – If the Futures Tournament, hosted by Western New England University, is any indication, the Johnson & Wales University wrestling team is in good hands moving forward. The Wildcats won three titles during Saturday's competition.

The top seed at 141 pounds, Freddy Eckles picked up a tech fall in his opening bout then posted a pair of decisions to get to the finals. In the championship match, he beat Roger Williams' Ben Bariso, 3-0.

Seeded second at 165 pounds, Steven Ocampo got a major decision to start his run then posted a pair of decisions. In the finals, he got a forfeit against teammate Gabriel Degraffinreed after he got a pin and tech fall to get into the championship bout.

A major decision and two tech falls put Gabe McDaniel in the semifinals of 149 pounds. A pair of forfeits got him the title. Sophomore Sam Tenaglia recorded a major decision and pin to get to the finals of 157 pounds, but he was beat by Roger Williams' Jackson Wrobel.

The semifinals of the 133-pound consolation bracket featured a trio of Wildcats. Christopher Caban beat teammate Gavin Cunningham, but forfeited the third-place match to first-year Christian Rivas.

It was another all-JWU match up in the third-place match at 125 pounds. Rookie Adam Quintanilla pinned classmate Gabriel Leo in just 1:15.
