Wildcats Defeat Engineers and Bantams

BRISTOL, RI – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team continued its dominance over NEWA opponents with a pair of wins on Saturday at the Roger Williams Quad Meet. The sixth-ranked Wildcats defeated WPI, 31-16, then topped Trinity College, 33-18.

The win was Johnson & Wales' 51st in a row versus New England schools, dating back to the start of the 2016-17 season.

JWU started off quickly against the Engineers with pins from Adam Quintanilla, Freddy Eckles and Marvin Cunningham in three of the first four bouts. WPI closed within 18-13, but Cam Altobelli won at 174 pounds and Nick Caracappa posted an 11-2 major decision at 184 pounds. Liridon Leka at 285 pounds secured the team victory with a pin in just 1:24.

The Bantams handed the Wildcats 18 free points with forfeits at the first three weight classes. That came into play as Trinity tied the meet at 18-18 after 174 pounds. JWU won the last three matches with a pin from Caracappa, and 8-6 decision by Jordi Perez at 197 pounds and Leka's second pin of the day.

JWU is back on the mat Saturday when it travels to Springfield College for a quad meet with the Pride, Cortland State and Castleton.
