#6 JWU Wrestling Captures Fourth-Straight NEWA Duals Title

PROVIDENCE, RI – From the first match to the last, the Johnson & Wales University wrestling team was on a mission Sunday at the NEWA Dual Championships. The sixth-ranked Wildcats rolled to their fourth-straight championship at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

Johnson & Wales is the first program in New England to win four-straight NEWA titles. Overall, JWU has won eight NEWA Championships.

The Wildcats blanked Plymouth State, 54-0, to start the day then beat WPI, 44-3. Johnson & Wales stopped Roger Williams, 36-8, before taking down #10 Coast Guard, 30-8, in the finals.

The last time Johnson & Wales and Coast Guard met, the match came down to criteria. That wouldn't be needed the second time as the Wildcats won the first five matches. Christopher Caban and Hayden Brown each had first-period pins. Ninth-ranked Jordan Robinson won 4-0 at 141 pounds and at 149 pounds, No. 7 Da'mani Burns posted a 10-1 triumph.

At 157 pounds, Brady Robin notched a 6-3 win over Marco Dominguez to extend the JWU lead to 22-0. The Bears won the next three matches, but fourth-ranked Giovanni Santiago beat No. 7  Jon Wagner, 3-1, in overtime to wrap up the title. For good measure, Michael DiNardo pinned Thomas Sidener in just 48 seconds at 285 pounds.

Rival Roger Williams stood between Johnson & Wales and a spot in the finals. Brown pinned Sean Wieck in just 1:40 at 133 pounds. Robinson produced a 16-5 major decision against Tommy Gallagher.  Nick Munsch secured the team win by pinning Anthony Malfitano in 4:19 at 184 pounds.

It was a pretty easy route to the semifinals as the Wildcats took the first six matches against the Engineers. Justin Lopez pinned Christian Curll in just 31 seconds. After a pair of tech falls, Burns only needed 1:47 to pin Ronan Bell. Nick Caracappa produced a pin in 1:38 against George Horta at 184 pounds and DiNardo finished off by pinning Niko Diakides in just 45 seconds.

Johnson & Wales cruised to its first victory of the day over the Panthers. JWU received forfeits in the first two matches then added back-to-back pins by Burns and Darius Joyce.  Santiago and DiNardo wrapped up the win with a pair of pins.

Johnson & Wales is on the road Saturday for the Stevens Quad then comes home to host the JWU Wildcat Open on Sunday.
