YORK, Pa. – Back in action for the first time in two weeks, the fifth-ranked Johnson & Wales University wrestling team had a good opening day at the New Standard Invitational, hosted by York College. The Wildcats have 11 wrestlers alive in the quarterfinals after Friday's action.
Third-ranked Da'mani Burns recorded a pair of pins to start the tournament. He took down Jack Albin from Johns Hopkins in 2:32 then only needed 1:27 to pin Ithaca's Adrian Rosario-Beato. At 285 pounds, the top seed and sixth-ranked Michael DiNardo got a first round bye then took down TCNJ's Benny Dahdah, 4-1, to make it to the quarters.
Two Wildcats moved on to the quarterfinals at 141 pounds. Eighth-ranked Gabe McDaniel posted a 16-1 major decision versus Ursinus' Brandon Miller before stopping Pasquale Vizzoni of Stevens, 6-2. Also advancing was Jordan Robinson thanks to a 14-2 major decision versus Elizabethtown's Harry Marr then a pin in 1:30 to beat Austin Sargeant from Brockport.
Junior Justin Lopez had a 10-5 win to start his run at 125 pounds then got a third-period pin versus Cortland's Pat Owens. His quarterfinal match is against fourth-ranked Matt Caccamise of Brockport. Also getting a ranked wrestler on Saturday will be Freddy Eckles at 133 pounds. He posted a 16-0 tech fall in his first match then pinned Roger Williams' Sean Wieck in the third period to set up a quarterfinal bout versus fourth-ranked Kordell Rush from Delaware Valley.
At 157 pounds, Sam Tenaglia opened with a 9-2 win then shut out Stevens' Nick Pepe with a 10-0 major decision. Cam Altobelli pinned Joey Bunce at 174 pounds from the host school York in 2:26 then toppled Gary Nagle from Ursinus, 12-4. Sophomore Tommy Wrzesien racked up big team points at 197 pounds with a 10-0 major decision versus Merchant Marine's Andrew French then pined Jonathan Bishop from Averett in 1:08.
A pair of wrestlers received a first-round bye and only needed to win one match to advance to the quarterfinals. At 165 pounds, Tim Higginson pinned Carsten Digiantomasso from Stevens in 2:34. Sophomore Liridon Leka was a 4-2 winner at 285 pounds over Hank Behaeghel from Johns Hopkins.
