McDaniel and Brown Recognized by NEWA

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Johnson & Wales wrestling team saw their season start on a high note this weekend at the Ithaca Invitational. The Wildcats swept the weekly honors handed out by the New England Wrestling Association. Sophomore Gabriel McDaniel was named Wrestler of the Week while Hayden Brown was tabbed Rookie of the Week.

McDaniel, the 141-pounder from McDonough, Ga., went 5-0 at the tournament en route to the championship. He scored an impressive victory over the 2X All American and 2018 National Champion Ben Brisman of Ithaca 5-3. He then followed that up by beating his teammate, Jordan Robinson, who just defeated the All-American from Baldwin Wallace Charles Nash.

Exeter, N.H. native Brown also left Ithaca unblemished to open his career with a 5-0 mark. With two pins, a major and two decisions under his belt, the unseeded Brown claimed the championship at 133 pounds over the #1 seed Tito Colom of Ithaca.

Thanks to the efforts of McDaniel and Brown, the Wildcats went on to win the Ithaca Invitational team championship again.

JWU hits the road again this coming weekend when they travel to Troy, N.Y. for the Journeyman Duals.
